I was just emailing with an old schoolmate; she was telling me that she writes a post for her blog, at least once a week. I also, recently, spoke with a theater pal, who happens to be a gifted writer; who's blog is widely read. I stand, sort of, in shame before them, as I look over the posts of the last year. It seems I have only written one post a month, so far in 2012. Not gonna get 'hits' that way! So, unless the Muse slaps me, this, if I stay at my current pace, is September's post.
Here, it's one of those gray, rainy September days. The good news is that because of the crazy Summer weather we'd experienced; like my gouache above, there are still roses blooming. They are at their very last blossoms, but they are still here, late in the month. Sometimes, when I take "The Rascal" for a walk, I get a little bored, so I look for details. You know, like, the last vestiges of Summer - roses; the 'gingerbread' of a Victorian home; the craftmanship of a Craftsman home; the cat hiding under the porch; the incredible audacity of the rabbits in the neighborhood, who are brazen enough to jump right out in front of the Dog and I. But, because of the, shall we say, unusual weather this Summer; I really took note of the flowers in the neighborhood.
The variety and color was spectacular. Even now, the color of the Fall flowers are amazing. Color can consume us artists, so bear with me. So, as I was becoming obsessed; I broke out my trusty old Olympus (yeah, 7 or 8 years ago, it WAS state-of-the-art), early this Summer, and took on it our walks.
This shot was from last week. It was a rather lonely rose on a sparsely flowered bush. When I print it, I plan to crop and enlarge it. (Inspired by Ms. Allison Hoge's earlier artwork, I might add!) I have a bunch of posy pics now, many that I will enlarge. I haven't decided whether to frame them separately, or group several together in one large frame. One of the problems I've produced for myself - I have so many shots now, from the Summer, I have actually considered groups of photos, such as a series of "Red", "Pink" or "Yellow" - even enough shots of interesting plants to do a series called "Green". My less fruitful search was for a series of "Blue". There were very few plants out there, that actually produced flowers that were actually blue. A lot of violets, purples and lavenders; what I would consider a true blue - not so much.
Yes, I get carried away.
No, obviously, I am not becoming a photographer. And, yes flowers have been done to death. But if you took note of the color this Summer, you can understand how I became smitten with it.
There was one drawback to my foray into photography; his name is Rascal. I have deleted numerous shots because of his "assistance" on our walks. It seems the minute I focused on a particular composition, he would decide to check out the scene elsewhere, pulling me with him. Thus, I have pics like this (right). I was surprised when I downloaded it to my computer, to see his head in the corner - I thought I actually got that one in time - even though I was wrapped up in his leash. It seems, somehow he managed to pull me off balance and pull the focus to himself. Hmmmm, very dog-like.
So now, it's the end of September. There's color in the leaves... maybe I'd better back up all those Summer pics first.
September. Where did the time go? With the change of the seasons comes the change in how things are; how they feel. Even with the mild weather, that 'frost alert' the other night, signaled that change. Nature tends to do that to us. Maybe that's a good thing. Hell, I'm actually writing a post, aren't I?
Yeah! Glad to see you posting. Totally understand the passion for pictures of pretty posies! And the way the color effects you, yes, totally get that to.
Have a great weekend!
